VF-2 vs VF-3 vs VF-4: Sizing a Used Haas Mill

Bigger iron does not cost more money. The observed price bands by model year, why the submodel suffix moves the price more than the model number, and the spindle math that decides all three.

Here is the thing the listings will not say out loud: on the used market, a bigger Haas mill does not reliably cost more than a smaller one. Same vintage, more machine, same money. Once you see that in the price bands, you stop shopping by model number the way most buyers do and start shopping by year and spindle spec, which is what is actually setting the price.

Travels: the suffix matters more than the number

Start with what you are physically buying. Model-page spec data for recent units: the VF-2 runs 30 x 16 x 20 inches (X/Y/Z), 40-taper. The VF-3 runs 1,270 x 508 x 635 mm, which is 50 x 20 x 25 inches, with CAT-40/CT-40 taper options. The VF-4 runs 1,016 x 406 x 635 mm, or 40 x 16 x 25 inches, CAT-40/BT-40.

Now stop reading the model number. Each one is tracked as a family of submodels, and the letters after the number change the spec: VF-2B, VF-2D, VF-2DTR, VF-2SS, VF-2TR, VF-2YT on the small machine; VF-3B, VF-3D, VF-3DYT, VF-3SS, VF-3SSYT, VF-3YT, VF-3YT/50 on the mid; VF-4B, VF-4D, VF-4SS and EU variants on the large.

Two suffixes carry real money. SS means a 12,000 rpm spindle instead of the base 8,100. YT adds Y travel, and this is the one buyers miss: a VF-2YT gives you 20 inches of Y, the same as a VF-3, in a VF-2 footprint. If the part that will not fit is too wide rather than too long, you have been shopping a size class too high.

Verify travels against the specific serial number before you bid. The spec data above is drawn from recent model years, and this platform has been in production since the mid-1990s. Thirty years of listings is a lot of drift.

What each size actually sells for

VF-2 by model year: 1994-2008, $8,900-$12,500. 2010-2015, $34,500-$39,950. 2016-2022, $41,900-$62,900. Current listings span 1996-2025 model years and run as high as $126,500 for late SS-spec iron.

VF-3: 1994-1998, $12,000-$15,500. 1999-2004, $17,900-$27,500. 2005-2010, $29,500-$45,000. 2011-2018, $39,500-$54,500. Current active listings for recent configurations cluster around $84,500-$99,900.

VF-4: 1994-1998, $11,999-$19,500. 1999-2003, $12,500-$28,500. 2004-2013, $29,900-$52,500. 2014-2021, $47,100-$78,500. Two named comps: a 2013 VF-4SS at $47,500 in Ellensburg WA, and a 2018 VF-4SS with a 4th axis at $79,500 in California.

Bigger iron does not carry a size premium

Line up the middle bands and look at what the market is doing. VF-3 2005-2010 sits at $29,500-$45,000. VF-4 2004-2013 sits at $29,900-$52,500. That is essentially the same money for a machine with a foot more Z. Move up a decade and the pattern remains: VF-3 2011-2018 at $39,500-$54,500 against VF-4 2014-2021 at $47,100-$78,500, overlapping through most of their width.

So what are you actually paying for? Within a given vintage, envelope size is not it. Model year and spindle spec are. A 2013 VF-4SS at $47,500 lands inside the VF-3's 2011-2018 band while giving you a 25-inch Z and a 12,000 rpm spindle. Shop the year and the suffix, then let the envelope be a filter that rules machines out rather than a lever the seller uses to price them up.

Spindle work costs the same on all three

This is where the size question stops mattering at all, because these machines share a cartridge family. One rebuild tech comparing a VF-SS spindle against the VF-3/VF-4-family cartridge stated flatly that the two are almost identical and carry the same bearing numbers.

Repair pricing reflects that. Across the VF-series, a spindle rebuild runs $4,800-$7,200 and a full replacement cartridge runs $16,000-$24,000 before install labor, with a rough 40/60 parts-to-labor split. Rebuild lead time is 3-6 weeks; replacement is 8-16 weeks. In a one-machine shop, that second number is most of a quarter with nothing cutting.

The break-even rule from the same source is that a rebuild should not exceed roughly 20 percent of the machine's resale value. Run that against the bands and the answer changes by tier, not by size:

  • A 1990s-era VF-2 topping out at $12,500: a $4,800 rebuild is 38 percent of the machine. The economics say walk or part it out.
  • A 2013 VF-4SS at $47,500: the same $4,800 rebuild is 10 percent. Straightforward yes.
  • A mid-band VF-3 at $45,000 facing a $16,000 replacement cartridge: 36 percent. Roughly a third of the machine gone in one invoice, so only worth it if the price already reflects a dead spindle.

Notice that the cheapest machine carries the worst spindle math. That is not an accident. It is most of the reason vintage iron is cheap.

So measure before debating the price. Runout under 0.0002 inch at the taper is almost always a rebuild candidate. Over 0.0005 inch, or a cracked or spalled shaft, or a damaged housing bore, and you are buying a replacement.

Shop air is the bearing-life variable

Older VF-series spindles are lubricated by an air-oil mist fed from shop air. Oil sprays in at the top cap, lubricates the upper bearing pair, mists down through the main bearings, and exits the nose. Which means somebody else's compressor, in the corner of somebody else's shop, has been feeding your spindle bearings for years. Feed that system wet air and you get water in the oil path.

One documented VF-3 teardown found a rusty bearing collar and badly worn bearings roughly a year after a rebuild, with the technician suspecting a compressor running without an air dryer. A year, on fresh bearings.

Two questions for the seller, both worth asking before you look at paint: is there a dryer on the compressor feeding this machine, and has anyone ever greased the spindle bearings? These are not grease-packed bearings. Greasing them destroys them.

If a rotary is fitted

Same risk on all three sizes, none of it size-dependent. Oil weeping at the rotary seal is the early warning that the oil needs replacing. A fill plug that is not seated properly lets debris in, and the debris gums up the internal gears. Which one to buy

Buy the VF-2 if your parts fit inside 30 x 16 x 20 and your shop is tight. If Y is the only constraint, price a VF-2YT before you jump a size class.

Buy the VF-3 if you need 50 inches of X. That is the one thing neither of the others gives you, and it is the entire reason to pay VF-3 money.

Buy the VF-4 if you need 25 inches of Z and 40 inches of X but can live with the same 16 inches of Y as a VF-2. On current bands it is frequently the cheapest route to a bigger machine.

Before you wire money

  1. Get both hour meters, power-on and spindle, in writing.
  2. Measure runout at the taper cold, then again after a full warm-up. Write down both numbers.
  3. Confirm the exact submodel suffix against the serial plate, not the listing headline.
  4. Ask about the compressor and the air dryer. Ask whether the spindle has ever been greased.
  5. Price the machine against its year band above, not against the seller's ask, then subtract the spindle scenario at $4,800-$7,200 rebuild or $16,000-$24,000 replacement.
