Probing and 4th Axis: Which Options Hold Value Used

There is no public Haas option price list, so nobody can honestly tell you what a probe is worth. Here is how to price an option off the year bands instead, and what to inspect before you pay a premium.

Sellers price options with a lot of confidence. The market data does not back most of it up, and the reason is simple: Haas does not publish retail pricing for parts or options. There is no list price for a probe kit, a rotary table, or a spindle upgrade that you can hold anyone to.

What does exist is aggregated used-listing data broken out by model year and submodel. That data cannot tell you what a probe is worth. It can tell you something better: which options the market treats as a different machine, and which ones vanish into the noise.

The market tracks spindle and travel. It does not track bolt-ons.

Aggregated listings break the VF-2 into submodels: VF-2B, VF-2D, VF-2DTR, VF-2SS, VF-2TR, VF-2YT. The VF-3 splits further into VF-3B, VF-3D, VF-3DYT, VF-3SS, VF-3SSYT, VF-3YT and VF-3YT/50. The VF-4 runs VF-4B, VF-4D, VF-4SS and EU variants.

Look at what earns its own designation. SS is the 12,000 rpm spindle against a base of 8,100. YT is extra Y travel, 20 inches instead of 16 on a VF-2. Those are permanent changes to the machine. You cannot unbolt them and take them to the next machine. The market can see them, so it indexes them.

Probing appears nowhere in that structure. Neither does a 4th axis. They show up, if at all, in the free text of an individual listing. That is the most useful fact on this page: options that change what the machine fundamentally is get their own market. Options that bolt on and unbolt do not.

What a 4th axis actually does to the ask

There is one clean, dated comp in the record. A 2018 VF-4SS with a 4th axis listed at $79,500 in California. The observed VF-4 band for 2014-2021 model years is $47,100-$78,500.

So a machine carrying both the Super Speed spindle and a rotary sits at the very top of its year band and about a thousand dollars above it. Not a new tier. A thousand dollars. Compare that with the other named comp, a 2013 VF-4SS at $47,500 in Ellensburg WA against a 2004-2013 band of $29,900-$52,500, which also puts an SS machine near the top of its band rather than beyond it.

The pattern in the data is less glamorous than the sales pitch: option content gets you to the top of your year band, not into a band above it. That hands you a clean negotiating position. Price the machine at its year band first. Whatever sits above the band top is the seller's option premium, itemized for you. Then ask yourself whether you would write a separate check for that number.

Be honest about the sample size, though. That is one 4th-axis comp with no matched non-rotary equivalent at the same year and spec. It sets a ceiling worth knowing. It is not a formula.

Probing: no premium is visible in the data

No sourced price data separates a probe-equipped VF from an otherwise identical machine without one. Which means anyone naming a specific used-market dollar spread for probing, this site included, would be making it up.

That cuts both ways. Do not pay a large stated premium for probing on the argument that it is worth it, and do not walk away from a well-priced machine for lacking it. Set the price on the year band, then treat the probe as a working accessory whose value depends entirely on whether it works. Test it on a part of known geometry, run it through several cycles, confirm it repeats. A probe that needs recalibration is a task you inherited, not an asset you bought.

Inspecting a rotary, which is where the actual risk sits

Haas service guidance flags a short list of rotary failure modes, and they are worth an hour of your time on any optioned machine:

  • Oil weeping at the rotary seal. Called out as an early warning sign, with the response being to replace the oil. Get underneath the unit and look for a wet seal before you accept a seller telling you the rotary is fine.
  • The fill plug. A plug that is not seated properly lets debris into the unit, and that debris gums up the internal gears. Check that the plug is seated and check the oil for contamination.
  • Encoder and motor cable damage. The one genuinely low-stakes item on the list. Replacement cable stock ships next-day from haasparts.com, so a damaged cable is a delay rather than a deal-breaker.

Rotate the unit through a full revolution by hand with the power off, then again under power, and listen at the gearbox. Check oil level and color. A rotary that has sat neglected on a machine nobody ever used it on is not a bonus feature. It is a maintenance item that came with the purchase.

The question to ask yourself first

Does your current work actually require indexed or simultaneous 4th-axis operations, or are you buying the capability in case you need it someday? If it is the second one, say what that means plainly: you are paying an unquantified premium, at the top of a year band, for a unit with documented seal and contamination failure modes and no published parts pricing behind it.

Nothing in the sourced record supports the idea that an unused rotary or an untested probe holds its value. What holds value in the data is spindle spec and travel, because those are what the market indexes.

How to price an optioned machine

  1. Identify the exact submodel from the serial plate. SS and YT designations are real price drivers; confirm them there rather than in the listing headline.
  2. Place the machine in its model-year band and treat that as the base price.
  3. Subtract the band top from the ask. Whatever remains is the seller pricing the options. Decide if you would pay that separately.
  4. Demonstrate every option before it is worth anything. Probe on a known part through repeated cycles. Rotary through a full revolution, by hand and under power.
  5. Inspect the rotary seal for weeping, check the fill plug seating, and check oil level and color.
  6. Get a written Haas Factory Outlet quote for anything you would need to repair or retrofit. There is no public price list to check it against.
