Walk into a shop and the seller pulls the machine out of the corner. You have maybe two hours before you have to decide: is this a machine that is going to cut parts in your shop, or is it a very heavy mistake?
A good inspection does not require a degree or three machines behind you. It requires a system, a notepad, and the discipline to actually write down what you find. Every hesitation you feel during the inspection turns into an assumption after the trailer pulls away. Better to hesitate on-site.
The meters, first
Ask for both power-on hours and spindle hours. Those are two different meters. Power-on counts every hour the control had electricity. Spindle hours count only the time the cutter was actually turning. A machine can show huge power-on numbers and very little cutting, or the reverse.
Write both down and verify you can read them on the control yourself. If the seller does not know where the hour meter lives, that is information too.
Here is the part that surprises people. The consistent testimony across the repair-video evidence we have mined is that a 12,000-hour machine that cut aluminum at moderate loads in a clean production shop routinely beats a 5,000-hour machine that hogged hard material or sat cold in a damp corner for years. Hours tell you usage intensity only alongside what the machine was cutting and how it was kept. Get both numbers and ask what it ran, because one number alone is a half-truth. The spindle: three steps
The spindle is the most expensive thing on the machine to get wrong, so it gets three steps instead of one.
Cold listen. Before anyone turns the machine on, open the spindle belt cover and listen near the pulley as you turn it. Roughness is a warning. A smooth whisper is a good sign. This costs you nothing and takes ninety seconds.
Warm-up run. Fire up the machine and run the spindle through its whole speed band, low to high and back down. Listen for grinding, chirping, or a sudden change in tone at a particular speed. Bearing wear announces itself as noise. You are not diagnosing it here. You are detecting it.
Taper runout. Runout is how much the spindle taper wobbles off true as it turns, measured with a dial indicator in ten-thousandths of an inch. Zero the indicator on the spindle nose, rotate the spindle by hand, and read the swing.
The numbers here come from specialist rebuilders rather than from Haas. On the VF-series, runout holding under 0.0002 inch is almost always a rebuild candidate rather than a replacement one. Runout past 0.0005 inch, or a shaft that is cracked or spalled, pushes you into replacement. That distinction is worth real money: a VF-series spindle rebuild runs $4,800 to $7,200, while a full replacement cartridge runs $16,000 to $24,000.
There is a second rule from the same rebuilders that matters more than either number. A rebuild is only financially sensible if it costs no more than roughly 20 percent of what the machine is worth on resale. On a VF-2 from the 1994 to 2008 band, where used machines sit at $8,900 to $12,500, a spindle rebuild is the entire value of the machine again. On a 2010 to 2015 machine at $34,500 to $39,950, the same rebuild is a bad week rather than a total loss. Same repair, completely different decision. Time matters too. Rebuild lead time runs three to six weeks. Replacement runs two to sixteen weeks depending on what is in stock. Either way you are not cutting parts.
The ways and ballscrews
Wipe a clean cloth along the X and Y ways, near the table and at the far end of travel. You are looking for scoring, galling, rust, or grease that has gone gritty. Then run the table and cross-slide manually through full travel and feel for binding, notches, or spots that suddenly go slack. Smooth under your hand is what you want.
Check the ballscrews for rust or packed chips along their length. Ask when the machine last ran. A machine that has been sitting in a humid space for years carries corrosion risk you should price into your bid, not discover afterward.
The turret or tool changer
On a lathe, index the turret through every position. Each slot should seat cleanly and firmly. Listen and feel for play or grinding.
On a mill with an automatic tool changer, run several cycles with no chips in the machine. The arm should move smoothly, the gripper should open and close cleanly, and the tool should seat in the spindle without anyone forcing it. Metal-on-metal noise rather than servo noise is not a good sign.
Note that we cannot give you a repair number here, and neither can anyone else honestly. There is no published turret replacement price in our record set, and Haas does not publish a retail parts list at all. Any figure you see quoted for this is somebody's guess dressed up as data. Get a written quote from a dealer before you assume a number.
The control and coolant system
Turn the machine on and watch the boot. Does the control come alive cleanly? Does it throw error codes? If it does, photograph them and research them later, before you commit rather than after.
Check the coolant level and color. Brown or milky coolant means water contamination or bacterial growth, which signals maintenance neglect and possible hidden corrosion inside the sump. Clear coolant means somebody was paying attention. Smell it. Coolant that has fermented is telling you about the owner as much as the machine.
Then ask an odd question: is there an air dryer on the shop compressor? On the VF-series, the spindle bearings are lubricated by an air-oil mist system, meaning the shop's compressed air is being blown through the bearings continuously. One documented VF-3 rebuild failed roughly a year after the work, and the technician's suspicion was moisture from a compressor with no dryer, contaminating the oil mist. If the seller does not know whether there was a dryer, treat the spindle as a bigger unknown than the meter suggests.
The parts question nobody answers straight
Before you buy any Haas, understand how you will buy parts for it. Haas sells through its Factory Outlet dealer network only. There is no public OEM price list. The parts site routes you to a dealer for a quote, every time.
That is not a scandal, but it is a budgeting fact, and it is one most buying guides skip entirely. It means you cannot look up what a part costs before you need it, and it means your local dealer relationship is part of the ownership cost. The paperwork you actually need
Get maintenance records if they exist. Get a history of major repairs. Photograph both hour meters, any error codes on the display, and the general condition of the machine. If the seller refuses photographs, the conversation is over.
Then ask directly: has this machine ever had a spindle rebuild, a ballscrew replacement, or a gearbox repair? Write down the answers. A seller who is vague on that question has just told you something.
The walk-away signs
Rust inside the spindle taper or on the ways. A turret that will not seat without forcing. A control that will not boot or shows persistent errors nobody can explain. A coolant system that has clearly been abandoned. Runout past 0.0005 inch on a machine priced as if the spindle were healthy.
Any used machine is going to show wear. That is normal and it is not the point. The point is the difference between a machine that was run hard and a machine that was neglected, because the first one is a fair price negotiation and the second one is somebody else's problem transferred to your floor.
